ACCURRA-TCD · Argon

Online argon gas analyser based on thermal conductivity

ACCURRA-TCD measures argon in a binary mixture by thermal conductivity, with a platinum sensor and no reference gas. Use it for argon purity and for argon in nitrogen, helium or hydrogen.

Quick answer

ACCURRA-TCD measures argon in a binary mixture by thermal conductivity with no reference gas. It works very well against helium or hydrogen and moderately against nitrogen. For oxygen or CO2 impurity in argon, use ACCURRA-S instead.

Key features

  • Binary argon measurement
  • Isolated 4-20 mA, programmable alarms, Modbus RTU
  • No reference gas

How it works

Argon conducts heat roughly a third less well than nitrogen, so an argon and nitrogen mixture gives a clear but modest signal, and argon in helium or hydrogen gives a very strong one. The analyser's range is chosen to suit.

Typical uses: argon purity at air separation and filling plants, argon in furnace and welding atmospheres, argon-nitrogen blends. Argon and oxygen have similar thermal conductivity, so oxygen in argon is better measured with an oxygen sensor; use ACCURRA-S for oxygen impurity in argon.

Selection guidance

Choose ACCURRA-TCD for argon as the main component of a binary mixture, and ACCURRA-S for trace impurities in argon such as oxygen, CO2 and moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Can it measure oxygen in argon?

Argon and oxygen have similar conductivity; use an ACCURRA-S oxygen model for oxygen impurity.

Does it need a reference gas?

No.

What about argon-CO2 mixes?

Argon in CO2 is listed on wide ranges only, 40 to 100 or 80 to 100 percent, because the two conduct heat similarly. Low levels of CO2 in argon are better read by NDIR on ACCURRA-S 6030.

Which backgrounds?

Nitrogen, air, oxygen, carbon dioxide or xenon, one at a time.
